Media wall guide

Power, cables and built-out walls.

The parts of a media wall nobody sees are the ones to plan first: how the wall is built, where the power goes, and how the cables get from the TV to the boxes.

Built-out or fitted

Two ways to build it.

Option 1

Units on the wall

A run of low units, open TV cabinets, shelves and panelling fixed to the existing wall, with the TV in a cabinet or on a bracket. Quicker, and no building work.

Option 2

A built-out wall

A stud wall built out in front of the original, with recesses for the TV and fire. Your joiner or builder builds the stud wall on site, and we make the cabinets, shelves and panels that go in and round it.

Power and cables

Plan the power before the wall goes up.

  • Sockets behind the TV and inside the low units for the boxes, router and lighting driver.
  • A cable route from the TV down into the units, so no wires show. In a stud wall, a conduit makes it easy to add cables later.
  • The fire needs power where its instructions say. Ask your electrician.
  • Aerial and network points should end up inside the units, not behind a panel.

Fixings

Fixing the TV and the units.

A wall-mounted TV needs fixing into something solid. In a stud wall, ask your joiner to fit timber or a backing board where the bracket goes, before the wall is boarded. Units and shelves also need solid fixings, so mark where they go on the stud plan.

Air

Let the kit breathe.

Boxes, consoles and amplifiers get warm, and an electric fire has its own rules for air gaps. Leave gaps or vents in the cabinets that hold the kit, and follow the fire maker's instructions exactly.

Measuring

How to measure for a media wall.

  • Wall width at the floor, at TV height and near the ceiling
  • Ceiling height at both ends
  • Chimney breast and alcove sizes, if there are any
  • Windows, doors and radiators, measured from a corner
  • Sockets, aerial and network points, and the skirting height

For a built-out wall, measure again once the stud wall is boarded, and send us the finished sizes before we make anything.

Checklist

Power and cables checklist.

  • Built-out stud wall or units on the existing wall decided
  • Socket, aerial and network positions agreed with your electrician
  • Cable route from the TV to the units planned
  • Timber or backing board fitted where the TV bracket goes
  • Air gaps planned for the kit and the fire
  • Finished wall measured before ordering
