Wall panel guide

Choosing a profile, board and finish.

Our MDF wall panels come grooved, reeded or fluted, on board from 9 to 22mm, as full sheets or cut to your sizes. Here is how to choose, and how to plan where the panelling goes.

Profiles

Grooved, reeded or fluted.

Grooved

Lines that read as boarding

V-groove, bead and butt, square groove and slatted, on 9, 12 or 18mm board. Long grooved along the sheet or short grooved across it.

Reeded

Reeds standing proud

From a fine 12mm reed to a wide 50mm reed. The classic for kitchen islands, bar fronts and bath panels.

Fluted

Flutes cut into the face

Scallop, wave, wide cove, narrow flute and beaded flute. Calm from across the room, clear up close.

See every profile, drawn in section, on our wall panels and MDF doors page.

Planning the wall

Full height, half height or a feature.

  • How high: full height for a feature wall, or half height in a hallway or bedroom. Line the top edge up with something, such as a window sill or the light switches, so it doesn't cut across them awkwardly.
  • Where the lines land: on grooved and reeded panels, we can set the centres so a groove or reed lands neatly at each end of the wall, not a thin sliver.
  • Which way: vertical lines make a room feel taller; horizontal lines make a wall feel wider.
  • Matching doors: our one-piece MDF doors, in 18, 22 or 25mm, are cut on the same machine, so cupboards, wardrobes or an island can match the panelling.

Finish

Painting MDF panels.

MDF soaks up paint, so seal the cut edges and use an MDF primer before your top coats. Fill fixing holes and caulk the joints first, and leave each coat to dry fully. Deep reeds and flutes are easier to paint with a small brush or a spray.
