Wardrobe guide

Measuring for fitted wardrobes.

Walls are rarely straight and ceilings are rarely level, so good measurements are what make a fitted run look built in. Here is what to measure, and how we deal with awkward rooms.

Measuring

What to measure.

  • Width: wall to wall at the floor, at waist height and near the ceiling. Send all three.
  • Height: floor to ceiling at both ends of the wall and in the middle.
  • Depth available: from the wall to anything in front of it, such as a door frame, window or radiator. Our wardrobes are 600mm deep, plus the doors.
  • In the way: skirting, coving, sockets, light switches, radiators, windows and door frames, measured from a corner and from the floor.
  • Photos: a photo of the wall, and of anything awkward, helps us more than a long description.

Our measuring guide has a drawing of where to measure. If your joiner is fitting, ask them to measure; they will allow for scribing.

What we send back

A layout before anything is cut.

Send us the room sizes and ceiling height and we send back a layout: how many wardrobes, what widths, and where the scribes and fillers fall. Nothing is cut until you agree it.

Sizes

Sizes to plan with.

Above 2300mm, top boxes and bridging units take the run up to the ceiling. Full details are on our bedrooms page.

Awkward rooms

Sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and eaves.

Because we make every carcass to size, an awkward room gets cabinets made to fit it, not packers and filler panels.

  • Sloping ceilings: measure the height where the slope starts and at the lowest point, and how far the slope runs. The carcasses follow it, so the run still meets the ceiling.
  • Eaves: measure the height of the low wall and the depth into the eaves. Low cupboards or drawers can use the space under the slope.
  • Chimney breasts: measure the width and depth of the breast and of each alcove. Wardrobes can fill the alcoves, or run across the whole wall with the units in front of the breast made to suit.
  • Bulkheads: measure the height underneath and how far the bulkhead comes out, and we make the wardrobes to fit below it.
  • Narrow rooms: sliding doors keep the floor clear, because nothing swings into the room.
