Trade toolkit · Kitchens
Plan a straight, L-shaped, U-shaped or galley worktop. Enter the wall runs and the planner works out every piece, where the joints go, how many lengths to buy and how much upstand you need. Below it is a technical fitting guide, and worktop jigs are available from DTJ.
Wall runs
Measure each run along the wall, right into the corner. The tool takes off the corner overlap for you.

Cutting plan
Cutting mason’s mitres or butt joints? Worktop jigs are available from DTJ, and the fitting guide below covers joints, cut-outs and fixing.
How to use it
In an L-shaped kitchen one run goes right into the corner and the other butts against it. So the butting piece is its wall run less the worktop depth: a 2400 mm run against a 600 mm deep top is a 1800 mm piece, plus any overhang and trim allowance. In a U-shaped kitchen the back run goes into both corners and both side runs butt against it.
If a run is longer than one worktop, the planner splits it into equal pieces with a joint. Put joints over a cabinet side, keep them at least 150 mm away from a sink or hob cut-out, and seal the edges before you bolt them up.

Worktop jigs
Cut mason’s mitres and butt joints like the factory does. Worktop jigs can be bought from DTJ: contact us for prices and availability, or ask when you collect from our Long Eaton workshop.
Questions
Add up each wall run, take off the worktop depth wherever one piece butts into another, add your overhang at open ends and a little for trimming the factory ends. Then fit those pieces into the lengths you can buy. The planner does all of this and shows the offcuts.
A mason's mitre is a corner joint cut with a jig and router, where the male piece is cut to a short 45° mitre at the front edge and runs into a recess cut into the female piece. It hides the end grain of the post-formed edge. You need around 30 mm extra on the male piece to cut it.
Laminate worktops are usually sold in 3000, 3600 and 4100 mm lengths, 600 mm deep for runs and 900 mm deep for islands and breakfast bars. Solid wood and compact laminate come in other sizes; choose Other length to enter your own.
