Price jobs properly. Work out how many sheets a parts list needs, build up a quote from labour, materials and markup, convert between markup and margin, and add VAT, CIS deductions and retention.
How many sheets, and how much edging?
List the parts. The estimate allows for offcuts with a nesting yield; a full cutting list cut on a CNC usually gets 75–85%.
| Part | Length mm | Width mm | Qty | Long edges | Short edges | Remove |

Markup or margin
Markup is profit as a share of cost. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. 25% markup is only a 20% margin.
Add or remove VAT
Construction Industry Scheme deduction
The contractor deducts CIS from the labour part of your invoice only. Materials you bought for the job and VAT are not deducted.
A guide only. Check rates and the reverse charge rules with HMRC or your accountant.
How to use it
List the parts with their sizes and quantities. The calculator works out the area, the number of sheets at a realistic yield and the metres of edge banding. It is a quick take-off, not a nesting program. For an exact cut, send the list to our " + CUT + ".
Enter the days on site and your day rate, the materials and your markup on them, any other costs, a contingency and VAT. You get the price before and after VAT, and what you actually make.
Markup is added to cost; margin is a share of the price. A 25% markup is only a 20% margin. Enter the cost and either the markup, the margin or the selling price to see the rest.
Add or remove 20% VAT, and work out the deduction under the Construction Industry Scheme at 20% for registered subcontractors, 30% for unregistered, or 0% with gross payment status. CIS is taken off the labour only, not materials. Where the domestic reverse charge applies, the contractor accounts for the VAT, not you.
Questions
Markup is your profit as a percentage of cost. Margin is your profit as a percentage of the selling price. Cost £100, price £125: that is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.
The contractor deducts 20% (or 30% if you are not registered) from the labour part of your invoice, not from materials or VAT, and pays it to HMRC on your behalf. It counts towards your tax bill. Check your own position with HMRC or your accountant.
Add up the area of the parts and divide by the area of a sheet, then allow for the offcuts. A yield of 75 to 85% is realistic for cabinet parts. The Sheet materials tab does this for you.
