Square Metre and Volume Calculator

Work out floor, wall and ceiling areas in square metres, including L-shapes, triangles and circles, take away doors and windows, add waste and get the number of packs. Then work out concrete, screed or sand in cubic metres and tonnes.

Areas

Add each wall, floor or panel. Tick Take away for windows, doors and anything you are not covering.

How to use it

Build the shape from simple pieces.

Area

  1. Add a row for each part of the room. An L-shaped room is two rectangles. A bay is a rectangle plus a trapezium.
  2. Take things away. Tick Take away on a row for doors, windows, a chimney breast or a kitchen island you are not flooring under.
  3. Add waste and pack size. 5 to 10% is typical for flooring and tiles, more for diagonal layouts. Enter the coverage of one pack to get the number of packs.

Volume

Add a row for each slab, footing, post hole or ramp. Choose the material to get the weight as well, so you know how many bulk bags to order and whether the van can carry it.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I work out square metres?

Multiply length by width in metres. 4.2 m by 3.6 m is 15.12 m². For odd shapes, split the room into rectangles and triangles and add them up, which is what this calculator does.

How much extra should I allow for waste?

Around 5% for straight-laid laminate or carpet tiles, 10% for most tiles and wood flooring, and 15% or more for herringbone or diagonal layouts.

How do I work out cubic metres of concrete?

Length × width × depth in metres. A 3 m by 2 m slab 100 mm deep is 0.6 m³. Concrete weighs about 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre.
