How to use it

From room shape to cutting list.

  1. Draw the room. Start from a rectangle or an L-shape, or click round the room corner by corner. Type each wall's length as you go, drag corners and walls to adjust them, and add cutouts for a hearth, island or column, and doorways on the walls.
  2. Add your floor. Enter the plank or tile size, how many come in a pack and the price. Add underlay, adhesive and grout if the job needs them.
  3. Choose the layout. Planks can start each row with the last row's offcut, at a set offset, or at random. Tiles can be a grid or a brick bond, centred or from a corner. Herringbone works for planks, blocks or tiles. Set the direction, the shortest end piece, the joint stagger and the expansion gap, and drag the pattern to move it.
  4. Read off the quantities. You get the packs to order with your spare, how much isn't laid, skirting lengths, underlay rolls, adhesive bags and grout, with a cost ex VAT and inc VAT. Add more rooms with the same floor, and offcuts carry on from room to room.
  5. Save it. Download the cutting list as a CSV, or save the project file to open again later or on another computer.

How it works out the quantities

It lays every piece in the room, row by row, and cuts each one from a new plank or tile, or from an offcut big enough to use. Planks keep track of which end is factory-cut, so a starting piece only comes from an offcut that still has a factory end. Packs are the pieces used plus your spare, rounded up to whole packs.

Grout uses the usual formula: (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width) × tile thickness × joint width × grout density, per square metre.

The planner is a guide for estimating and setting out. Always follow the floor maker's fitting instructions for gaps, end lengths and stagger.

Questions

Common questions.

How much extra flooring should I order?

Most fitters allow 5 to 10% on top of the floor area: nearer 5% for straight planks in a simple room, and 10% or more for tiles, diagonal layouts, herringbone or rooms with lots of corners. The planner lays every piece, so it shows how much is really lost to cuts, then adds your spare on top.

What expansion gap does laminate or engineered flooring need?

Often around 8 to 10 mm at the walls and round fixed objects such as pipes and door frames, and more in big rooms. It depends on the floor, so the planner starts at 10 mm and you can change it to the gap in the floor maker’s instructions.

How short can the end pieces be?

Many plank floors ask for end pieces of at least 300 mm, with the joints in neighbouring rows at least 300 mm apart, which is where the planner starts. Some floors allow less. Set both to your floor’s figures and the planner arranges the rows to keep to them.

Does it work for herringbone?

Yes. Choose herringbone for planks or parquet blocks and it counts the left-hand and right-hand pieces you need, or use it with rectangular tiles.

Is my plan saved?

It stays in your browser on this device, so it’s still there when you come back. Nothing you type is sent to us. To keep a copy or move it to another computer, save the project file and open it again later.
