Board and Panel Weight Calculator

Work out what a door, panel or full sheet weighs in MFC, MDF, plywood, solid timber, glass and more. You also get a hinge guide for doors, the power factor for lift-up flaps, the weight to check against sliding door gear, and a total for a whole job.

Weights use typical densities. Real boards vary by a few percent between makers and batches, and moisture content changes solid timber more than board.

How to use it

From board to fittings.

  1. Pick the material. The density fills in with a typical figure. If you have the board maker's data sheet, type the exact density in.
  2. Enter the thickness, height and width, how many you have, and the weight of the handle and anything else fixed to the panel.
  3. Say what it is. A hinged door gets a guide to how many hinges it needs. A lift-up flap gets its power factor for choosing the lift mechanism. A sliding door gets the weight to check against the gear.
  4. Weigh the whole job by listing every part, to plan lifting, loading and delivery.

The maths

Weight is height × width × thickness × density. With sizes in millimetres and density in kg/m³, that is H × W × T × density ÷ 1,000,000,000. 18 mm MFC at 650 kg/m³ weighs about 11.7 kg per square metre, so a 2000 × 500 mm wardrobe door is about 11.7 kg before the handle.

Typical densities

  • Chipboard / MFC: about 650 kg/m³, or 11.7 kg/m² at 18 mm
  • MDF: about 750 kg/m³, or 13.5 kg/m² at 18 mm
  • Birch plywood: about 680 kg/m³, or 12.2 kg/m² at 18 mm
  • Solid oak: about 720 kg/m³, or 14.4 kg/m² at 20 mm
  • Glass and mirror: about 2,500 kg/m³, or 15 kg/m² at 6 mm

Questions

Common questions.

How much does a sheet of 18 mm MFC weigh?

About 68 kg for a full 2800 × 2070 mm Egger sheet, and about 35 kg for a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, at a typical 650 kg/m³.

How many hinges does a door need?

As a guide, 2 hinges up to 900 mm tall and 6 kg, 3 up to 1600 mm and 12 kg, 4 up to 2000 mm and 17 kg, and 5 up to 2400 mm and 22 kg, with one more on doors wider than 600 mm. Include the handle in the weight, and always check the hinge maker’s chart.

What is the power factor of a lift-up flap?

Cabinet height in millimetres multiplied by the front weight in kilograms, with the handle counted twice. Each lift mechanism covers a range of power factors, so you choose the one whose range includes your figure.

Is MDF heavier than MFC?

Yes, by roughly 15% at the same thickness: about 13.5 kg/m² for 18 mm MDF against 11.7 kg/m² for 18 mm MFC.
