Bathroom guide

Basins, toilets and pipes.

Vanity and WC units are built round the sanitaryware and the pipes behind it. Choose the suite first, measure where the pipes come through, and the units will fit first time.

Choose first

Choose the basin, taps and toilet first.

Send us the make and model of each, or the spec sheets, before we draw anything.

  • Basin: a countertop, semi-recessed or inset basin changes the unit height and the top. Check it suits a 340mm-deep unit.
  • Taps: wall-mounted taps need pipes in the wall; deck taps need room on the top or basin.
  • Toilet: for a back-to-wall pan with a concealed cistern, send the cistern or frame model and the flush plate, and we build the WC unit round them.
  • Floor-standing or wall-hung: wall-hung units need a solid wall or a framework strong enough to carry them. Ask your fitter before you decide.

Measuring

Measure round the pipes.

  • The wall: width at the floor and at worktop height, and the ceiling height.
  • Pipes: where the water and waste come through the wall or floor, measured from a corner and from the floor.
  • In the way: boxing, windows, radiators, the bath or shower tray, and the door swing.
  • Clear space: leave enough room in front of the toilet and basin to use them comfortably.

If your plumber is moving pipes, measure once the new positions are fixed. Our measuring guide shows where to measure.

Damp rooms

Looking after units in a bathroom.

Keep the room well ventilated with an extractor fan, seal round the basin and along the back of the top so water can't sit on the edges, and wipe up standing water on tops and plinths.
