How to use it

Type it the way you would say it.

Choose what you are converting, length, area, volume, weight, angle and slope, temperature or pressure, then type a value in the unit you have. Every other unit updates as you type.

  • Feet and inches: type 8' 6 1/2" or 8ft 6in. The result is shown in decimal inches and as feet, inches and fractions.
  • Nearest fraction: the millimetres to fraction section rounds to the nearest 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 of an inch and tells you how far out that is, for when the tape is imperial and the drawing is metric.
  • Angles and slopes: convert between degrees, percent gradient, a ratio such as 1 in 12, and rise per metre. Useful for ramps, drainage falls and roof pitches.
  • Sums: you can type simple sums in any box, for example 2400-18*2.

Questions

Common questions.

How many millimetres in an inch?

Exactly 25.4 mm. A foot is 304.8 mm, and a metre is 3 ft 3 3/8 in, near enough.

How do I convert a slope in degrees to a ratio?

Take the tangent of the angle: a 1 in 12 slope is 4.76°, and 45° is 1 in 1. Use the Angle & slope tab to convert either way.

What is a square metre in square feet?

One square metre is 10.764 square feet. A standard 2400 × 1200 mm sheet is 2.88 m², or 31 ft².
