Trade toolkit · Second fix
Work out a second fix in one go: the doors and linings, the architrave (archs) for every door side and the skirting for every room, with a cutting plan for each length, a shopping list and a price for the job.
Your doors
One row for each door size. A pair of doors is 2 leaves on one row. Common sizes are 1981 mm high by 610, 686, 762 or 838 wide, or metric 2040 mm high by 526, 626, 726, 826 or 926 wide.
| Where | Doors | Leaf width | Height | Leaves | Archs | Lining | Hinges | Remove |

Your rooms
The skirting goes round each room and stops at the architrave either side of each doorway. Add bays, chimney breast sides or boxing as extra walls, with a comma between them. An internal door is a doorway in both rooms it joins.

Everything you type stays in this browser. Lengths are worked out from the sizes above, so check them against the doors and mouldings you buy.
How to use it
An architrave leg runs from the floor to the outside of the mitre at the head: the gap under the door + the door height + the gap at the head + the reveal + the architrave width. For a 1981 mm door with 69 mm architrave, a 10 mm gap under the door, 3 mm at the head and a 5 mm reveal, that's 2,068 mm, so 2.1 m lengths work. A 2040 mm metric door needs 2.2 m lengths or longer.
The head is the width between the lining legs + twice the reveal + twice the architrave width, and the skirting stops at the outside edge of the archs either side. Every piece gets a little extra for trimming, and the pieces are fitted into your lengths longest first, so offcuts are used before a new length is cut.
A wall longer than one length is joined with a scarf joint. The doorways are taken out of the middle of the longest walls, so your real pieces can come out a little different. Always check the sizes on site before you cut.
Questions
Add up every wall, take off each doorway from the outside of one architrave to the outside of the other, and allow a little on each run for scribing the inside corners and mitring the outside ones. Then fit the pieces into the lengths you can buy, which is what the calculator does, rather than just dividing the total by one length.
Each side of a door takes two legs and a head. With 2.1 m lengths that is usually a length for each leg and half a length for the head, as one length gives two heads. A door with archs on both sides needs twice that.
Light hollow-core doors often hang on one pair. Heavier solid doors usually get three hinges (one and a half pairs), and fire doors should be hung exactly as the door maker’s instructions say, which normally means three.
Imperial doors are 1981 mm (6′ 6″) high and 610, 686, 762 or 838 mm wide. Metric doors are 2040 mm high and 526, 626, 726, 826 or 926 mm wide. Linings and architrave sets are sold to suit both.
It stays in your browser on this device, so it’s still there when you come back. Nothing you type is sent to us. Use Copy the list or Print to keep a copy.
