Angled Cabinet Mitre Calculator

Building a cabinet into an angled corner or under a sloping ceiling? Enter the room angle and your board thickness. The calculator gives the bevel to set on your table saw or track saw, and the long and short point of each cut, for a top that sits on, between or mitred to the sides.

Saw settings

Angles are from square: 0° is a normal square cut. Use the figure as the blade tilt on a table saw or track saw, or the mitre on a mitre saw.

Bottom ends of the sides are square. Check the first panel against the room before cutting the rest.

How to use it

From the room angle to the saw setting.

  1. Measure the cabinet. The calculator opens on Sloped top: enter the inside width and the inside height at each end, and it works out the angles for you. If you have measured the corner angles with an angle finder or sliding bevel, switch to I've measured the corner angles.
  2. Enter the board thickness. 18 mm for most MFC and MDF carcasses.
  3. Choose how the joint goes together. Tap the picture for each corner: the top can sit over the side, sit under it (between the sides), or be mitred. You can set the left and right corners differently.
  4. Set your saw. The bevel is the tilt of your table saw blade or track saw, measured from square (0°). The diagram shows which face has the long point.

The maths

For a mitre, each piece is cut at half the joint angle, so the saw tilt is 90° − angle ÷ 2. A 90° corner needs 45° on both pieces, a 120° corner needs 30°. For an overlapping or butt joint, only one edge is bevelled and the tilt is the difference between the joint angle and 90°. The extra length taken up by the bevel is thickness × tan(tilt), which the calculator adds to the inside sizes to give you the long point.

Which way round?

A corner over 90° (an obtuse corner, like the top of a cabinet under a shallow slope) opens out, so the long point of a mitre is on the outside face. A corner under 90° closes in. Always cut a test piece from an offcut first and offer it up.

Questions

Common questions.

What angle do I set my saw to for a mitre?

Half the joint angle, measured from square. For two pieces meeting at 135°, each piece needs a 22.5° bevel (90 − 135 ÷ 2). Enter the angle here and the calculator gives the setting, the long point and the short point.

How do I fit a cabinet under a sloping ceiling?

Measure the width of the cabinet and the inside height at each end, then use the Sloped top mode. It gives the slope angle, the length of the top, the height of each side and the bevel on each joint, so the top follows the ceiling.

Should the top go over or between the sides?

Over the sides hides the end grain of the sides from above and is easy to fix through. Between the sides gives clean side panels, which matters on a visible end. A mitre hides all the edges but is harder to cut and glue accurately.

Can you make angled cabinets for me?

Yes. We cut, edge and build carcasses to any size in our Long Eaton workshop. Send us a sketch with the angles and sizes through our cut and edge service page.
